Where is the Maid?!

11.R.2.2 Students can read fluently to comprehend grade-level text.
For this cycle I’m reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett . After each chapter I’ll be writing a summary of the events. I do wish I had more time to read my book. I didn’t finish chapters in class so I did have to finish 20% time at home. I’m going to continue working on this project until I finish the book.

Chapter 14
Minny was going to quit writing and telling stories for Skeeter but then Abilene handed her a paper to read and she changed her mind to stick with the plan of explain how being a maid really is. Abilene made it loud and clear to Mrs. Hilly and Mrs. Leefolt, if she were to go to school then she would prefer it to be a white and a black school where the two could come together and not be segregated. In a few chapters before, Skeeter left her purse with all the information the three ladies had collected at the clubs meeting. Hilly being nosey grabbed her purse and brought it home with her so she could sneak through Skeeter’s bag with it being justifiable. From what Hilly says to Skeeter it seems as though Hilly only saw the Jim Crow Laws and nothing else. A famous black man was shot in the black part of town. On the radio, people were saying a white man from the “KKK” was the murderer. In the book, President Kennedy talks to the Governor, saying how he needs to create a segregated comity to solve things out. But the Governor spits back in his face saying, over all, blacks and whites should be separated and not on my clock will they be joining together under my authority.

Chapter 15
Abilene tells Baby Girl a story before she falls asleep to get rid of a cold. The story is about how blacks and whites have the same body parts, therefore explaining in a kid friendly way, blacks and whites are equal despite what society was saying. The next day, Mrs. Leefolt and Baby Girl, along with Abeline, go to a country club with Hilly. Skeeter was playing tennis by herself and after she caught a glimpse of Hilly and Leefolt at the pool area. At first, Hilly made it seem as if she hadn’t seen anything and she wanted to talk about it later. But Skeeter asked again and Hilly said she saw the Jim Crow Laws. But Skeeter in panic of what she might tell the community says she got them from the library and she was reading it for enjoyment. This, in reality, isn’t a lie. Skeeter also cons Hilly in believing if she was really working with black people Hilly would have been informed by Skeeter and not by snooping around in her belongings.

Chapter 16
A week after the famous black man was shot, in front of his children, Adeline’s church called for a prayer meeting. Abilene goes, but while everyone was praying, a young black man about 23 years old barges into the church and asked what people are going to do about blacks and whites segregation besides pray and seek how to make it better. After everyone sat in silence for a while, things began to die down. Once prayer was over, Abilene walked up to Yule May contemplating on asking her to participate in writing Skeeter’s book. Abilene got enough courage to bring up the subject. Yule May was practically begging Abilene to ask her. Yule hasn’t committed to writing yet but she does sound interested and she is going to call Abilene in private to learn more details.

11.R.2.2 Students can read fluently to comprehend grade-level text. For this cycle I’m reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett. So far, I’m really enjoying this cycle. It’s been pretty heated; many of two best friends turn on each other. It’s getting me really pumped to read and finish the rest of the book. I will be done with this book in the next cycle.

Chapter 21
Skeeter just gets home from her evening out with her now ex boyfriend. Her moms ulcers have gotten worse therefore the doctor orders for their family to have a fan. Unfortunately, their house cannot hold the voltage of the machine on its highest power. Two weeks later, Skeeter still hasn’t broken the news to her family and they still think they are dating. Skeeter keeps herself busy with stories from maid and creates false confidence when she gets asked if the book is really going to make it big. Hilly catches Skeeter at the meeting before they both leave; Hilly said she wouldn’t give the writings back to Skeeeter until she posted something in the local news paper. Reluctantly Skeeter posts Hilly’s initiative.

Chapter 22
Mae Mobley turns three. Aibileen cooks two different kinds of cake, strawberry for the birthday girl and chocolate for the pregnant mother. Aibileen tells Mae Mobley she is one of her kids and now Mae is calling Aibileen “momma”. Skeeter wrote in the news paper to leave a toilet in Hilly’s yard because hers broke. So at least thirty people put toilets in her yard; it made the news papers in Jackson. Quite funny reallyJ. To get revenge on Skeeter, Hilly exposes Skeeters laws for slavery, saying she might as well be a integration supporter, without any hard proof. Mr. Leefolt tells Aibileen not to talk to Skeeter again and if he finds out they do talk he will cut her job with a bad reputation. Aibileen tells Skeeter she can no longer help her and as a good friend she catches her up on the past few days of drama.

Chapter 23
Skeeters plan to embarrassed Hilly backfired because Hilly is creating the picture of having all the toilets as such a blessing. Sadly, Aibileen is telling Mae Mobley about Martin Luther King, but just in kid form for her to grasp the fact that treating people differently just because they are a different color is unethical. Suddenly, the door rings and its Mrs. Celia all dressed up and looking shapely. The secret is starting to unwind, Elizabeth never recommended Celia’s maid.

Chapter 28
Eugenia just found out her mom has had cancer for over two months. Carlton comes home from LSU; when he sees his mom he becomes shocked to see how sickly she has become. From the looks of it, Skeeter’s mom is getting better. Yay, Skeeter and Stuart are slowly getting back together! Stuart asks Skeeter to marry. Before Skeeter says yes, she tells him about her book. Even though she said yes, Stuart takes back his proposal.

Chapter 29
Miss Leefolt has her son and still doesn’t care much about her daughter. It’s four days until the book comes out. Abielein gets told by Mea Mobly “you’re righter than Miss Taylor”. At that moment, it’s just what she needed to hear. Finally, Jackson Mississippi gets croppies; three are going in their library. The local channel is going to air a summary of the book. The congregation gives acknowledgement to Abielien for writing the book with such courage. The review wasn’t very good and was said to be about Jackson. We will see what the ladies of Jackson are going to say after they pick up The Help.

Chapter 30
Minny gets into a bad mood after she watches the books review on TV. The book is becoming the talk of the town. Miss Celia tells Minny even though she isn’t ever going to have children Minny’s job is secured for the rest of her life. LeeRoy is being a jerk and is trying to hurt Minny even though she is pregnant.

Even though it’s been taking me a while to finish reading this book, it may just have become my favorite. I wish I had more time to read. The time period in this is just so different than what I’m used to. The fact that we really used and treated maids like that; I’m glad the waters have turned.
Thanks kelseyrae for your review!
